Common uses
SMS codes work anywhere a person might prefer texting to calling or browsing. Because the message is pre-written, you can use it as a keyword to trigger an automated reply from your SMS platform.
- Text JOIN to subscribe to alerts, with the keyword already filled in.
- Book a table or appointment by sending a short template message.
- Request a callback from a sales or support team.
- Vote or enter a competition at a live event.
Format and compatibility
The code uses the SMSTO:number:message format, which both iOS and Android camera apps recognise. Write the number in international format with the country code, for example +1 for the US and Canada, so it works for visitors with foreign phones. Spaces and dashes are removed automatically.
Keep the message under about 160 characters. That is one standard SMS, and shorter content keeps the code easy to scan.
Consent and compliance
If you use SMS codes for marketing, local rules usually require clear opt-in and a way to unsubscribe. In the US that means TCPA and carrier guidelines; in the UK and EU, PECR and GDPR. Print the terms near the code, for example "Msg and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to cancel." A pre-filled message only opens the app; the person still chooses to send it, which is a helpful signal of consent.
